A template is the reason the sixth issue takes less time and money than the first. A website works the same way: once the parts are designed, each new page comes together fast.

What I do
- Design the masthead, the page grid, and the parts that repeat.
- Build templates for print, PDF, and email.
- Lay out each issue in its template.
- Prepare files for the printer or the email program.
- Design journal covers and interiors for print and PDF.
- Design websites from a set of parts, so type, grid, and color carry from page to page.
Where it comes from
Ten years in design, technology, and publishing workflow at Gannett. Before that, design and production at about ten newspapers and two alternative weeklies, the Baltimore City Paper and the Washington City Paper.
